Your children, your spouse or partner, other members of your family, and your closest friends all require your attention, just as much as your pet does. Your pet deserves your attention just as much as the other important people in your life, including your children. We do this through conversation, group activities, social media, and the tried-and-true method of sitting down to a meal together and inquiring about the day's events for each person in the group.
Have some fun with them
You have a responsibility to make sure that they are able to participate in the game of their choice on a daily basis for at least three, five, or seven minutes. Is it a game of tug-of-war, roughly touching each other, pursuing each other, or something else entirely.
Pay attention to how they act
After spending five to ten minutes going over a behavior (changing the behavior every day), three to five times, move on to the next behavior. Spend five to ten minutes going over a behavior (ex. Your dog gives you a sit then you may want to do a sit-up or teach a sit by the door). Set a goal for yourself to implement one or two NEW, SMALL behaviors once a week and make that goal a priority.
Spend some quality time with them
Make sure that you give your dog your complete and undivided attention during the activities that were listed above. This requires you to hang up the phone, shut down the computer, and let your family know that you are going to be spending some time alone with your dog.
You should take your dog to different rooms and areas of the house on a regular basis
You should familiarize your dog with a new area of the house, have it perform a "learned" activity, and then try out the behavior while you are positioned in a different way. If you complete most of your training while standing up, you might want to try doing the same action while sitting down or lying on the floor instead. The way in which your dog behaves will take you by surprise.
Be consistent in your cues
Be constant in the cues (verbal, signs, and bodily movement) that you give your dog while you are trying to communicate with him, and if another member of your family is able to assist you in this endeavor, have them do so. It's possible that the family member will surprise you with how much they appreciate what you're doing and how willing they are to participate actively.
Make a smile at your dog
Simply observe your dog's posture and movement when he or she is calmly seated or standing. Seeing your new pet will make you happy.
